Since 2024, the BHTC has been focused on piloting the processing flowsheet for the Kwinana Cobalt Refinery.

These programs have successfully produced battery-grade cobalt sulphate and high-purity cobalt metal for applications including batteries, defence and advanced manufacturing.

The program has included testing of feed material from:

  • Mixed hydroxide from the Broken Hill Cobalt Project

  • Cobalt hydroxide from Glencore’s mining operations in the DRC

  • Cobalt-nickel sulphide from an Australian nickel operation

  • Nickel-cobalt cakes from a recycling facility in USA

  • Cobalt cake from a recycling facility in India

  • Battery black mass from recycling facilities in Australia
