Cobalt Blue Contributes to CSIRO’s Australian-Made Battery

Cobalt Blue has supplied cobalt sulphate produced at the Broken Hill Technology Centre to CSIRO, which has used it to produce a lithium-ion battery built predominantly with Australian technology, materials, and expertise.

CSIRO’s battery demonstrates Australia’s capability to produce the critical components needed for battery manufacturing, highlighting the country’s opportunity to build a domestic battery industry by leveraging its abundant mineral resources, processing capability and technical expertise.

For Cobalt Blue, the contribution is a tangible demonstration of what the Kwinana Cobalt Refinery is being built to do at scale: produce battery-grade cobalt sulphate for use in Australian and global battery supply chains.

CSIRO’s NMC622 pouch-cell battery

The pouch cells delivered a capacity of 28 mAh, more than 93% of the design capacity, with good reproducibility and stable performance (2.0–4.3 V at 0.1 C; 1 C = 30 mA).

CoSO₄ (Cobalt Sulphate)

Produced at Cobalt Blue’s BHTC, demonstrating Cobalt Blue’s end-to-end capability from cobalt feedstock to battery-ready material.
